Pavilions for the International Fair of Cultures • Mexico City, Mexico • Finalist in competition

A series of temporary structures are installed on the Zócalo Square in Central Mexico City for the International Fair of Cultures comprising a pavilion for Mexico City, a fair hall accommodating 70 embassies and an open forum for events. All structures are realised in modules made of commercial plywood sheets of 1.22m x 2.44m. Like a house of cards, the modules are assembled to buildings using the method of intersection in order to stabilise the structures and to simplify the construction. The pavilion for Mexico City is a semi-transparent enclosure with a stepped void space referring to the three-dimensional silhouette of the ancient pyramid that was originally located on the site hundreds of years ago prior to the colonial period.
